I met Julie the summer of 1996 when we embarked on the great Peace Corps journey to Moldova together. While there we were travel companions in and outside of Moldova, visited one another’s “site”, hung out in Chisinau on the weekends, enjoyed American holidays together and talked…a lot! I even learned how to braid hair thanks to Julie’s goal of maintaining cornrows! Since our Peace Corps time together, I have had several opportunities to meet up with Julie…picked her up in Maine when she finished the Appalachian Trail (gave her clean underwear and jeans), snagged her in Boston for a bit and brought her to some meditation thingy out in Western Massachusetts (she was one of the first to know that I was pregnant) and she visited with Carrie to my house in the Berkshires when there was a Peace Corps Reunion in DC. I have tried to keep in touch with Julie through lengthy emails, sending her Life is Good shirts for her to leave around the world on her travels, stalking Bill’s Facebook page because she is adamant not to have one (damn her) and every once-in-a-while there seem to be midnight phone calls, usually with Carrie around! I currently live in NH where I anxiously await Julie’s next random “I’m on the east coast, can you pick me up?” phone call.
Heehee, you got me Bridgie (careful what you wish for though, when it comes to midnight phone calls!)…any chance you can get to Alaska this summer? I, too, am jonesing for some Bridget time :). Love you!
